Tony Jaa is on a roll -downhill and fast
Studio chief Somsak 'Sia Jiang' Techaratanaprasert holds two press conferences in as many weeks about his top action star Thatchakorn 'Tony Jaa' Yeerum and you know things aren't going well at Sahamongkol Film International.
STUDIO CHIEF Somsak "Sia Jiang" Techaratanaprasert holds two press conferences in as many weeks about his top action star Thatchakorn "Tony Jaa" Yeerum and you know things aren't going well at Sahamongkol Film International.
Last week it was an "urgent" clarification that he wasn't upset after reading in the paper like everyone else that his boy was heading to Hollywood to appear in "Fast and Furious 7". Their freshly renewed 10-year contract didn't cover that possibility, Sia Jiang declared, but he sure wished Jaa had called him directly.
Another week passed and still no word from Jaa, so on Tuesday Sia Jiang faced the press again, this time flanked by filmmakers Prachya Pinkaew and Panna Ritthikrai. Reporters got only a few hours' advance notice - and then another clarification. Actually, the studio boss said, the contract with Jaa does cover overseas movie projects. "If he wants to be in 'Fast and Furious 7', they have to contact Sahamongkol Films for approval first," Sia Jiang growled. Now there were two furious things in the picture.
It turned out that the day after the previous press gab, Sia Jiang heard from Jaa - albeit not in person. Jaa sent him formal notice that he doesn't belong to Sahamongkol anymore and reserves the right to work on any movie project he chooses. Jaa also demanded that Sahamongkol seek his permission to use him (or presumably his likeness, at least) to promote "Tom Yum Goong 2" when it comes out on October 23.
"He said his move to Hollywood had nothing to do with me," Sia Jiang said. "But I called you guys here to make it clear why I've changed my stance."
Obviously sting by this latest unexpected and rather unpleasant surprise from his star, Sia Jiang sent out notifications of his own to other studios that they can't use Jaa without his okay.
Panna, a mentor for Jaa when it comes to martial arts, pointed out that Jaa had only just signed his revised Sahamongkol contract in mid-July. "He came with his wife and kid. He asked if it was okay if he accepted some advertising work." Amid this tussle, Panna tried to call, but said Jaa didn't answer the phone.
So, bottom line: Summon the lawyers.
Nothing was said at the press conference about Jaa's other movie in the works, "A Man Will Rise", which he co-stars in and co-directed with Swedish meatball Dolph Lungrund. Sahamongkol invested around Bt150 million, but Jaa seems to have walked away from the project, just as he did on "Ong-Bak 2" and "Ong-Bak 3", leaving Panna and Prachya to finish those films.
No work has been done on "A Man Will Rise" for two months and Jaa is virtually in hiding. Assistant director Vithitnan Rojanaphanich is ready to get the movie done, but Jaa's absence complicates things.
This is a hell of a way to advance your career, but perhaps before Hollywood is ready to embrace him, Jaa is going to have to clean up the mess at home.

Beyonce chops off all her hair: Singer debuts fierce new pixie cut
Beyonce, who is known for her trademark honey-colored tresses, has ditched her long hair for an edgier short pixie cut.
To show off her new look, Queen Bey, 31, posted photos on Instagram
The new hairdo comes just two weeks after her blond tresses got tangled in the blades of a fan during a performance of “Halo” in Montreal on July 22. Perhaps she’s taking some new safety precautions.
Other stars who have rocked the pixie cut in the past include Rihanna, Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway and, of course, Miley Cyrus.

Matt Damon Joins Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar,' Lines Up Directorial Debut 'The Foreigner'
So is Matt Damon reuniting with Paul Greengrass for another ‘Bourne’ film? While Twitch says yes, Universal Studios is denying their report. While we wait and see what shakes out, some surprising Damon-related news arrived when we turned to our trusted sources (you’ll remember we first reported on Greengrass leaving the 'Bourne 4' back in the day). But enough preamble...
The Playlist has learned that Matt Damon has joined Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” in a small, undisclosed role. The character, like all of the roles in the film, is being kept under wraps, but sources close to the actor tell us he’ll only be shooting on the project for two weeks in Iceland (for comparison sake, the entire shoot is scheduled for four months). It's another quick appearance for Damon in a forthcoming film, as he also has a small cameo in Terry Gilliam’s “The Zero Theorem,” which debuts at the Venice Film Festivalvery soon (look for our review in the upcoming days).
Meanwhile, Damon looks to have found what will be his directorial debut: “A Murder Foretold," penned by Academy Award-winning “Argo” screenwriter Chris Terrio. The film is based off a 2008 New Yorker articleby David Grann, that tells the true story of a man who is gunned down in the escalating violence in Guatemala, and leaves behind a videotape after his death implicating the president, his wife, and other close aides in his killing. Of course, this rocked the nation, with a special prosecutor who digs deep to find the shocking truth behind the man's murder. The project is currently set up at Paramount and Indian Paintbrush under Steve Zaillan’s Film Rites production banner. (Update: Following our report, Deadlinehas revealed the title of the movie to be "The Foreigner.")
As you might remember, Damon was supposed to direct “Promised Land” in the beginning of 2012, but reshoots on “Elysium” overlapped into the time he had planned to do pre-production work on the movie. Knowing his schedule would be too tight, Damon made the early decision to bow out and found a replacement in friend and filmmaker Gus Van Sant. It was Damon's third time working with him, and having worked with helmers like Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Terry Gilliam, Steven Soderbergh, Clint Eastwood and many other auteurs, he's been itching to join his friend Ben Affleck in trying his hand at directing. (Damon is also attached to "Father Daughter Time" at Warner Bros. though it looks like 'Foretold' is going first.)
So some exciting plans on the horizon for Damon, but before we go, here's one last bit of "Interstellar" trivia: celebrated Indian actor Irrfan Khan ("Life Of Pi," "The Amazing Spider-Man") turned down a role in Nolan's film. "I was in talks with them for an important role. It had a great compact cast, but I can't divulge much about that. They expected a huge commitment from my end. I had to stay in the U.S. for four months at a stretch. I tried to work out my schedule and suggested if I could shuttle between India and the U.S. as it wouldn't have been possible for me to be there for that long," he told The Times Of Indi. "I wanted to be here for 'The Lunchbox' and 'D-Day.' They couldn't allow that. I don't have a tendency to regret what I do, but knowing it's a Christopher Nolan film, I can say that this has been one of the most difficult decisions I've made."

Rapper Sean Kingston sued for alleged gang rape, report says.
Well-known rapper Sean Kingston is being sued for allegedly gang raping a teenage female back in 2010, TMZ
reports.
The woman claims that Kingston, his bodyguard and a member of his band, raped her while she was drunk in a Seattle hotel room after a Justin Bieber concert. Kingston also performed at the Bieber show.
In the suit, the woman states she thought she was going to have a meet-and-greet with Kingston, but when she arrived at the hotel room she was forced to have sex with the rapper and his associates. She was later treated at a hospital for injuries consistent with rape, according to TMZ.
The woman is now suing Kingston and the other two men for $5 million. The rapper insists the sex was consensual.
Criminal charges against Kingston—relating to the same incident—were dropped back in 2010.

Kanye West stops by Kris Jenner's talk show for interview.
(EW.com) -- Kris Jenner worked her magic — and familial connections, of course — to land an interview with the typically media-shy Kanye West, the father of her granddaughter North. Kanye stopped by the set of Kris on Monday to tape an hour-long interview that will air this week
West, who welcomed his first child with girlfriend Kim Kardashian in June, opens up to Jenner about his baby girl, falling in love with Kim, and dealing with the press.
He also addresses President Obama's comments last month about how celebrities like Kanye and Kim have shifted the idea of the American dream. "There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous," the president said at the time. "Kids weren't monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing, or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success."
"Kris" airs on select Fox stations, including in New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Stay tuned for more info on when Kanye's interview will air.

Ringing up the jackpot.
Thai rockers Slot Machine put the finishing touches to their fifth studio album.
With four hit albums and a wealth of music awards to their credit, Thai rockers Slot Machine could afford to take it easy for a while. But kicking back and chilling out is apparently not on the cards for the four-piece outfit who hit the big time back in 2008 with the hit album "Grey". The band will soon release its fifth studio album and is already making waves with the first cut, the catchy "Rung" (Rainbow), which they introduced to excited fans in their set at last Saturday's "Sonic Bang" festival.
Vocalist Setthapong "First" Durongjirakarn, guitarist Jenvit "Vit" Chanpanyawong, bassist Atirath "Kak" Pintong and drummer Settharat "Auto" Phangchunan got together nine years ago and over the years have won fans' hearts with such tracks as "Ror", "Pan", "Fan" and "Kham Sud Thai". Their 2011 album "Cell" spawned another wave of hits, among them "Neua Karn Wela", "Suan Dok Mai" and "Ratree Rai Nam", and won them recognition at the Season and Kom Chad Luek Awards.
For their latest offering, they've joined up with Australian producer, composer, and sound engineer Daniel Denholm, a man who's produced everyone from the Bee Gees to Midnight Oil.
"We met Daniel through [Bec-Tero] executive Neil Thompson. Neil used to work in the music industry so when we asked him to help us find a good producer, he immediately came up with Daniel," says First.
It's not the first time Slot Machine has picked a foreign engineer: For their 2008 release "Mutation", they worked with Scott Andrew Moffatt, who has also produced Thai outfits Mint, Brandnew Sunset, Getsunova and Apartment Khunpa.
Their latest album is being recorded at the Karma Sound Studios in Chon Buri, a venue chosen in the past by big international names like Jamiroquai, Placebo and Bullet For My Valentine. The tracks are then sent to the US for mixing by British sound engineer Tim Palmer before being mastered at Sterling Sound in New York.
"We've worked hard to develop all aspects of this album," says First. "I won't say it's better than our previous outings but it's certainly more beautiful. I think of it as a sculpture, a work of art to which great care is given but without wasting any time. We're a bit like scientists testing new experiences all the time, though the album is still very much rock.
First also wrote the first cut "Rung" and describes it as a song that encourages people facing obstacles in their lives to look forward and keep moving.
"It's inspired by the Thai idiom 'A good beginning makes a good ending' and refers to the Buddha's teachings about Nirvana, the real happiness. That's a little like a rainbow: it doesn't last forever and not everyone can see it but when you are at peace with yourself, you accept the truth in your life and that's your real happiness," says First.
The album is now about 70 per cent complete and Slot Machine is working hard with Denholm on laying down the remaining tracks before it goes off for mixing.
The album is scheduled to be in stores by the end of the year.

Seven ladies on one stage
Amp, Mai and Marsha are just some of the artists who got together for last weekend's green concert
CROWDS OF MUSIC fans packed into Royal Paragon Hall last weekend to revel in four hours of quality music in the 16th Green Concert held by Green Wave 106.5 FM and titled "Seven Return".
The show brought together female veterans Saowalak "Amp" Leelabutr, Mai Charoenpura, Marsha Wattanapanich, Nicole Theriault, Haruthai "Au" Muangboonsri, Myria "Nat" Benedetti and Pakkaramai "Tong" Potranan and as they assembled on the stage at the beginning of the show, fans were reminded of the long and close friendship.
After greeting the audience, the vocalists, all dressed in their trademark white shirts and blue jeans, spilt into groups of twos and threes with Amp, Mai and Marsha getting the show underway with "Klab Ma Ha Pheun".
Nicole and Au were next up with "Chan Mai Pen Rai", Tong and Nat joined forces for "Tor Rae" and the seven reunited for the "friendship" song, "Khwam Rak Thang 7".
The tone changed from laughter to appreciative murmurs as the large LCD screens showed a video made by the Luk Riang Group - the Children and Youth Association for Peace - in the southern border provinces to help kids who have suffered mentally from the violence in the South. Applause rang out loud and clear as the real children from the Luk Riang walked on to the stage.
Then it was back to the music with each of the seven ladies singing a medley of ballads and their own tracks off the album "Seven".This was followed by mini concerts on the theme of love and this time Au, clad in sexy black, kicked off the show with a cover of Nicole's "Wan Tee Aon Wai".
"The most important thing in my life is my family," said Au, swinging into "Wiman Din" as photos of her family pictures appeared on the big screen. She closed out her solo spot with the hit "Kae Lap Ta".
Tong , the baby of the concert, was next up on stage singing her hits "Hak Chan Rou", "Tan Kao Kan Mai". She thanked an ex boyfriend for walking out from her life and enabling her to settle down with the man of her dreams and followed up with her hit "Ja Rak Hai Dee Tae Sud" .
Nat served up a fast tempo show and dedicated her final number "Mai Mee Kri Rak Chan Tao Tor" to her boyfriend while Nicole opened her show with a medley of smooth ballads.
Amp, Mai and Marsha had fans up on their feet and dancing as they revved up the proceedings with a cover of Madonna's Like A Virgin".
And it was left to Amp to summarise the love stories of all seven artists with "Rueng Jing Ying Kwa Niyay".
Marsha's solo set included "Music Lover" and the ballad "Tor Sauy" and just as the last notes faded away, ex husband Amphol "Nui" Lampoon marched on to the stage and presented the singer and actress with a big bouquet of flowers.
The highlight of the night was a vocal battle between Marsha and Mai on "Kwam Dan Tu Rang Sung" and "Sud Rid Sud Dej". They joined forces, each using her vocal power to outstrip the other and the duel was so fairly matched that it drew loud and long cheers and applause from the crowd.
Mai rounded out the solo sets with a medley of fun beats bringing the audience back to their feet to sing and dance along with her.
The concert wrapped with a reprise of "Khwam Rak Thang 7", sending the audience home
happy and fulfilled.

'Girls Gone Wild' creator Joe Francis receives jail, probation for assaulting woman.
LOS ANGELES – "Girls Gone Wild" creator Joe Francis was sentenced Tuesday to 270 days in jail and three years' probation for choking a woman and repeatedly slamming her head to the ground at his Los Angeles mansion in 2011.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Nancy L. Newman also ordered the 40-year-old Francis to complete an anger management course and attend 52 sessions of psychological counseling, according to Deputy City Attorney Mitchell Fox.
A jury in May convicted Francis of five misdemeanor charges -- three counts of false imprisonment, one count of assault by means likely to cause great bodily injury, and one count of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.
Francis' attorney Steve Levine said key details of the case were proven to be false in court, and he is appealing the decision.
"Joe has always maintained his innocence," Levine said. He added that the judge "still came to a very fair and measured decision."
According to Fox, Francis met three women on Jan. 29, 2011, at a college graduation party at the Supper Club in Hollywood. He grabbed the arm of one of the girls and took her to his limo, and the two others followed, believing they'd be taken to their car. Instead, they ended up in a gated area of Francis' Bel Air home.
Francis appeared to be interested in one of the women and tried to lead her away, but her friend pulled back, Fox said.
Francis then "jumped on the friend, took her to the ground, choked her, slammed her head against the ground, dragged her across the ground, and when she got back up, did it several more times," Fox said.
He then apparently told the women they were trespassing and had to leave. The women said they were going to call the police, and Francis yelled to "go ahead and call the police," the prosecutor said.
Francis told the girls he "owns the police" and that officers wouldn't arrest him, Fox added.
Judge Newman denied Francis' request for a new trial Tuesday, but sentenced him to less than the four years in county jail urged by prosecutors.
Levine said Francis would be released from custody soon after posting a $250,000 bond Tuesday. He'll remain free pending the outcome of the appeal.
The day after Francis was convicted in Los Angeles, he told The Hollywood Reporter that members of the jury were "retarded," and said "they should all be lined up and shot."
Francis later apologized for his comments.
"This is one of those cases where being a celebrity did not help him at all," Levine said.
Francis has had a number of past legal troubles. Last year, a jury found him guilty of defaming casino mogul Steve Wynn on multiple occasions, including on ABC's national morning show. Francis claimed the creator of some of Las Vegas' most upscale resorts threatened to kill him over a gambling debt.
Dozens of other lawsuits have targeted Francis, who built a porn empire producing and marketing videos of young women exposing themselves on camera.
